WOODCUTTERS

Friday to Sunday, May 22–24 | 7 PM
Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse Lobby, Vineyard Haven

An elderly woman with glasses on her head sitting at a desk, reading a book with notes and pages, in a dark room with a black background. The desk has a bottle and a vase with red flowers, a lamp, and colorful sticky notes attached to the front.

What does it mean to make art, or bear witness, in a fracturing  world? In this stage adaptation of the Austrian novel Woodcutters, by Thomas Bernhard, actor Adrianne Krstansky performs an acerbic, darkly funny inner monologue in the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse lobby, transformed to resemble a Viennese coffeehouse. There, at an artists’ dinner taking place on the day of a mutual friend’s funeral, she is a disillusioned writer surveying the scene, silently eviscerating the surrounding cultural elite, and wrestling with her own longing for authenticity. A work in progress, this play invites audiences into the theatrical creative process.
